i think fang over reacted.
everything one has to look in a comparative way. if no nytimes, what else? how we know thigns happened in china?
the two writers crtiticized by fang are not really "journalists" or really belonging to NYT. tatlow lives in china for many years, basically she's kind of a wksn, i don't think she has formal trainings on news reporting, more like a free lance writer.
this time nocera is more of a columnist, what he wrote is more like a View, not a news. Competent journalists are trained to differentiate between N and V.
for years I keep reading western reports on china (my way: news.google.com, type china), of so many ones, washpost, latimes, economsit, wsj..., no1 beats nyt on china reporting.
its current reporters, wong, bradshaw, barboza, all give me good impressions.
one example, 2009 XJ riots. nyt and washpost showed huge difference. their Vs are similar, but Ns sharp distinction, the latter's strong Vs got into their N's part. ever since then, i almost ignore china section of wahs post.
i admit i almost relied on nyt on west's reportign on china, but i also try china own ones, and HK (mainly news.mingpao.com). put all them together, one got a pretty balanced overall pic of china today.
